pin+Pallet

Pin + Pallet is a collection of bread boxes customized to fit a variety of breads. Every Pin+Pallet box is handmade by Aisha in her wood shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each box is made from sustainably sourced hardwood and focuses on accepting the nature of the wood grain. Our lids can double as cutting boards and highlight end-grain designs. Pin+Pallet bread boxes are not airtight, allowing air to circulate and create a controlled environment retaining bread’s original characteristics: crispy exterior, a moist crumb, and a delectable chew.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR BOX

The job of a bread box is to create a controlled environment at room temperature. Unlike a paper bag or leaving your loaf on the counter, moisture from the bread raises the humidity in the box, keeping your loaf's interior soft and chewy. In contrast, air circulates through the two holes in the back of your box to keep the environment from getting too moist, which would cause the loaf to lose its crisp exterior and cause mold to grow, as plastic would. Moisture is circulated and slightly absorbed with an unsealed wood interior and breathable lid. Overfilling your box is tempting, but the more bread in your box, the higher the moisture is; hence, the crust is less crisp. Once you cut into your loaf, place the cut end against the interior wood wall or wrap it in beeswax or plastic wrap to retain moisture.

Why end-grain cutting boards?

  • The end grain surface of the wood is firmer and longer-lived. The hardness of an end grain surface is almost one and a half times higher than the hardness of a face grain surface.

  • When you use end-grain cutting boards, knives stay sharp longer and do not cut into the fibers of the wood, making it “self-repairing” when oiled.

  • End grain cutting boards are less subject to bacterial contamination because end grains can “close.” Clean and oil the boards after every use to protect against bacterial penetration inside the grains. End-cut wood boards are generally more hygienic than face grain, plastic, or glass.

CARE

All boxes are treated with food-grade oil and must be maintained with frequent use. Regular oiling prevents boxes from becoming dry and brittle, which can cause warping and cracking. Cutting board lids treated with oil prevent liquids from penetrating the wood, limiting warping, germs, and bacteria. Boxes and lids can be wiped down with a warm, damp cloth or cleaned by sprinkling the area with coarse salt and rubbing in with a half lemon; let sit for 10 minutes, rinse and oil. Boxes and lids should never be submerged in water as this could cause warping -oil after every cleaning to keep your box for many years. I recommend oiling the box and lid once a month.

  • Do not leave in direct sunlight.

  • Please do not use it in the dishwasher, oven, or microwave.

  • Store in a cool, dry location when not in use.

It is natural for wood to move as its moisture content changes. If your lid feels tight and is not in use, open it partially to allow your box to breathe, and store it in a cool, dry location. When you allow both sides of the cutting board to breathe, it will return to its original state. Regular oiling will also help prevent warping.

Recommended Oils + Conditioners:

  • Odie’s oil- (the thickest, most hydrating, and protective oil, great for your annual upkeep)

  • Walrus Oil- (a favorite for after a quick clean)

  • John Boos Block- Mystery Oil + Board Cream

  • Howard- Cutting Board Oil + Butcher Block Conditioner
